Reconciliation and resolution will be difficult, and we cannot give in to the temptation of cynicism because this rings as a cliche in our ears. From the perspective of Volf’s argument, hope lies in the (re)sources of the self. The self must make space for the other, even in spite of the risks involved in such vulnerability. The Israeli and the Palestinian must open themselves up to their respective traditions, to their respective histories, and to the reality of their violent memories. None are above the line. But a full and fruitful embrace, heralding the first steps of peace, justice, and reconciliation, must start here. The challenge, then, is how to build the space, in the state and the self, in midst of a heartland of fear, fanaticism, and fighting.[via Prolegomena]
