Historical Accuracy, Final Memory
Perhaps it is ignorant to assume that men and women care about legacy or posterity, or even about any other being beside themselves. Certainly there is a handful of enlightened humans who focus on their future instead of their present and who are as honest with themselves and others as they know how to be. But a handful of sand is lost in a landslide, just as a handful of good intentions is lost in a life filled with landmines of immediate gratification....[via You saved my life from a colorless one]
No man or woman's soul should be drawn and quartered in order to present only the fashionable side in public for a final memory as inaccurate as the history of a country written by the victor of a war.

Rapture and the Revolution
Larry Norman is no longer visiting this planet. The original Jesus rocker died Sunday of heart failure in Oregon. He was 60.[via slacktivist]
By the time I saw Norman play in the late '80s, his best work was behind him. He had become addled and erratic, prone to venting obliquely about the bridges he'd burned with so many of the people he'd worked with over the years. Yet still there were glimpses of the talent that had written so many weirdly beautiful songs.
He was, always, a long-haired, Son-worshipping Jesus Freak. A hippie -- with all of the unsustainable idealism and naivete that entails. For Norman, that hippie naivete merged with Hal Lindsay's premillennial dispensationalism -- setting him up for major disappointment and disillusionment when the 1980s arrived and neither the rapture nor the revolution seemed to be at hand. I can't help but wonder if the long downward spiral of Norman's later decades wasn't in part a result of his simple Jesus Freak idealism spoiling on the vine. {more}

Giving Out
Larry David Norman
April 8, 1947 – February 24, 2008
As we all do in life, he made many bad decisions and made some enemies. (I think research would validate that the most brilliant artists are more inclined to do so.) He was driven and self-indulgent, passionate and focused.[via ThinkChristian.NET]
Apparently he died a pauper and in relative obscurity; his death caused by heart problems. It figures it’s his heart that gave out. He used the heck out of it.{the rest}

Remembering...Always
To me, remembrance is about learning who we are and who we want to be.[via daydreamer]
...We can make people/criminals feel guilty for doing wrong in-the-eyes-of-another, but we can’t make people/criminals feel shame. Shame starts from within us. And it’s a means of personal change initiated by oneself. And the change can only be for the better when it’s understood (through increased skills to empathize with our victims) that disappearing will not benefit those we’ve hurt. Nothing can erase the damage done. But the best compensation for our victims is gaining healthier relationships. And the best way for victims to receive justice is to help the wrong-doer find their own true shame.
...Falsifying our personal history by censuring it is a crime. History should reveal the world of the adult along with the world of the child, memories of the good, and bad, in all.

Calling Yourself Exceptional Isn't
Just a quick Fourth of July note. Hope you set off lots of fireworks, and eat lots of hamburgers. But here's also hoping that you do it with a clear head.[via BlOG and MABLOG, emphasis mine]
This civil holiday celebrates resistance to tyranny. And of course, some of the most ardent participants at such events are those who want to justify contemporary tyranny, the kind who want to keep everybody well occupied over celebrations of resistance to yesteryear's tyrants....
Calling yourself exceptional isn't. Recognizing that we are mortal men just like other mortal men, and that we are vulnerable to all the same temptations, is rare. Boasting in American achievements barely manages to clear that Ozymandian low bar -- it is the kind of ordinary hubris nailed in a poem that was written before we defeated the Nazis, landed on the moon, built the space shuttle, and started selling iPhones that could serve as navigation systems for the space shuttle -- and when we invite mighty observers to look on our works and despair, we are acting like pretty much everybody else in the history of the world.

"We must now enter the time warp."
Blizzard outside Wednesday. Not from DQ. Survived. Saw Pac-Man cartoon Super Ghosts part 1 and part 2. Also watched the classic challenge of Mork vs. The Fonz.
