America right now reminds me of an old "original Star Trek" episode called "The Enemy Within," in which a malfunctioning transporter splits Captain Kirk into two -- one that has all his vital strength of command, and the other that has all his wisdom and judgment. (The episode is very provocative philosophically because the "half" that has Kirk's force also has his fear, while the "wise" side, though weak-willed and indecisive, is utterly fearless.) Not that either one is a perfect match for either party -- I don't know how wise the Democrats are -- but you know what I mean.
